Our Story
FCQ World Wide grew out of FCQ Eximtraders, a company established in Cebu City, Philippines in 1976. The original business was formed among Francisco siblings: two brothers, a sister married to a Concepcion and another married to a Quisumbing. That is where the initials F-C-Q came from. Over the years, we came to like another meaning for them too: First Class Quality.
FCQ was one of the many companies born during the puka and heishi jewelry boom of the 1970s. We survived that first rush and, in the 1980s, helped develop designer beads and components. The 1990s brought major changes in ownership and a much smaller company. FCQ World Wide emerged from that transition and continued with a core group of longtime people who had stayed with the business through thick and thin.
Through all those changes, the work itself has remained remarkably consistent: take a material, understand what it can do, work with craftspeople and suppliers, and find new ways to turn it into something people want to wear, use or live with.
Made to Order — The Heart of FCQ
FCQ is not simply a catalog of finished products. Much of our work begins with a customer, designer or buyer who wants something made: a variation of an existing piece, a different material or color, a component for their own design, or an entirely new idea.
Our Gallery and Archive are therefore also a design vocabulary. They show materials, techniques, forms and past solutions that can become starting points for new made-to-order work.
What We Make
Much of FCQ's work has been handmade, made-to-order jewelry components and finished pieces, along with small home décor, hats and bags made with many of the same craft processes.
Our materials have included wood, bone, coconut shell, seashells, fibers, resin, clay and combinations of materials. The crafts behind them include carving, painting, dyeing, molding, inlay, sand art, papier-mâché, bead making, grinding and polishing.
Cebu has long been home to a network of cottage-industry workshops, craftspeople, suppliers and exporters. FCQ's history belongs to that community, and many of our products have come from close collaboration with those makers.
